How to Find the Right Foundation for You!

Hello everyone! It is Thursday and I am back for another blog post

Foundation is, well, the foundation of your look. That's why it's so important to find the right fit. It's not just about selecting the right color-you also need a formula that works with your skin type, be that dry oily, combination, acne-prone, and so on.

For a decision this crucial we I turned to the pros. Read on to see the best tips from makeup artists to help you find the perfect foundation fit for you!

FOR DRY SKIN:

It's all about infusing your skin with moisture. The wrong foundation formula can end up looking cakey and cling to dry patches, accentuating skin's flaws. But the real secret, according to Emmy-nominated makeup artist Kathleen Marsh, is to start with the right primer,
"Primers really help to smooth over the surface, control oil in the oily parts, and soften over those dry flaky areas also" Marsh says.

You can also start with your standard skin care routine, like a moisturizer with SPF, to prep skin before applying. After that, look for a water based or moisturizing formula. (Marsh likes Makeup Forever HD Foundation.) Or, for lighter coverage, you can even try a tinted moisturizer or BB cram.

FOR OILY & COMBINATION SKIN:

The key is matifying to get rid of shine. Water, oil, or cream-based formulas will end up looking terrible by the end of the day. Instead, Atlanta-based makeup artist Mimi Johnson recommends looking for foundations formulated for oily skin (particularly those with a matte finish), a powder, or starting with a matifying primer, like BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation

FINDING THE RIGHT COLOR:

Once you have your formula picked out, it can still be tricky to find the right color. Katrina Hess, a Boston-based makeup artist and owner of The Makeup and Brow Studio, recommends trying shades on your decollete. That region gets more sun than under your jawline, so you're more likely to find a shade that works on your face as well. In general, she recommends matching the makeup to your forehead, nose, chin, and chest, which comes in handy especially for normal events when you might want to even out the skin tone above a low cut dress.

The most important factor, though, is finding a color that looks natural.
"If a foundation really blends into skin tone and doesn't look like makeup" Marsh says, " that's your color."
